Soak up the rAIN

SOAK Up the Rain

SOAK Up the Rain NH has partnered and advised on many projects around Nippo Lake.  Throughout our neighborhood you will notice rain gardens, rubber razors, rain barrels, and other methods to keep runoff stormwater safe as it enters back into the lake system.

If you plan on improving your own property with these environmentally friendly practices, SOAK Up the Rain NH has tons of nifty suggestions.  They have a DIY Fact Sheet for nearly every project you can think of and a full New Hampshire Homeowner's Guide to stormwater management.  Below are some of the projects that have happened around Nippo!

Rubber Razors

Rubber razors are a type of water bar that can be used to divert water into natural filtration like plants instead of running straight into a body of water completely unfiltered.  A few residents around Nippo have added rubber razors to their property especially in and around their driveways.  These photos show one of the raisers being added to a Nippo lake resident's driveway.

To make these, conveyor belt material is sandwiched between two piece of lumber and sticks out above the ground.  The lumber is then buried to protect it from damage, while keeping the conveyor belt out from the ground.  Stones are placed on the upslope to help guide water towards vegetation where silt and debris can be naturally filtered out.  The best part is the conveyer belt material is strong enough to be driven over and still maintain it's shape, providing for a formidable barrier to stormwater.
