Welcome New Nippo Neighbors
As the seasons pass, we are starting to see some of our lovely lake neighbors move along. Although we are sad to see them go, we are happy to have shared many wonderful Nippo times and memories with them.
We would now like to introduce and welcome our new lake neighbors: Daniel Thomas, Dana Salb, and Rosemary and Peter Dawson.
Welcome all and we look forward to meeting you at our forthcoming Association meetings and gatherings!

To help us soak up the rain, there is a new registered daylily named PRINCESS NIPPO to add to our rain gardens. NLA treasurer, John Richards enlisted his friend Dianne (a long time daylily grower in Dover) to create a unique fundraising effort for Nippo Lake. Dianne hybridized PRINCESS NIPPO, registered it, and is making it available for us to use as a fundraiser. While newly introduced varieties typically sell for $100 to $150 per plant, we aren’t daylily collectors. We want these planted and blooming (next year) around the lake! Thus PRINCESS NIPPO is priced at $50 and comes with a ‘bonus’ of a few additional named varieties as John helps Dianne downsize her gardens. The additional plants will be available in September. A lovely package of daylilies to soak up the rain!

Nippo Lake Treatment Update
Our long-awaited lake treatment went extremely well and is now done, with the final day of treatment wrapped up on June 17. The lake reopened for good on June 18 with a stunning improvement in lake clarity already becoming apparent. We’re advised we should expect to see that clarity improve even further over the next couple of weeks as the treatment continues to take hold. Our fish and loon populations have been carefully watched throughout and, as expected, tolerated the treatment well. Because the loons are visual feeders, they’re likely to be particularly happy with the marked improvement in water transparency.
Beginning in late June, NH DES in partnership with Nippo Lake Association’s lake monitors and our consulting expert, Don Kretchmer, will start a regime of post-treatment water observations, particularly to measure and record Secchi disk (water transparency) and pH levels, to make a longer term record of improvements in the lake.
Our collective gratitude is owed to the entire team who worked tirelessly through some extreme weather over the last few weeks to make the treatment a reality, particularly our NH DES colleagues Dave Neils, Amy Smagula, Kirsten Hugger, Sally Soule, our experts Don Kretchmer and Dr. Ken Wagner, and the SOLitude Lake Management treatment crew. Profound thanks are owed as well to all those who stepped up to support NLA’s effort to restore Nippo Lake to its pristine glory— remember on that next swim or boat ride to take a moment to salute them and celebrate our making this little bit of history!

The alum treatment of Nippo Lake concluded on Thursday June 17, 2021. Lake monitoring will continue throughout summer and into the future to collect data on the impact of the treatment. So far, the water clarity is all ready drastically improved. Water recreation and water draws are allowed at any time now, but as always please keep the lake as clean as possible!

NIPPO LAKE
TREATMENT AND CLOSURE SCHEDULE
TREATMENT AND CLOSURE SCHEDULE
The Nippo Lake Association, through its contractor, SOLitudeLake Management, will begin treatment of Nippo Lake on Tuesday, May 25th. SOLitude will be applying a solution of aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate. Aluminum from the products binds with phosphorous, one of the key nutrients that helps algae to thrive. By making the phosphorous unavailable as a nutrient, algae growth is reduced. This is being done to improve the water quality of Nippo Lake pursuant to a surface water discharge permit issued by the NH Department of Environmental Services, Discharge Permit No. Nippo Lake-001 under authority of RSA 485-A:13 I(a).
Pursuant to the above-referenced permit special condition # 13, there should be no swimming or water withdrawals from the lake for 24 hours after the completion of each stage of treatment and the lake not also not be used, including for boating, swimming, fishing or water draws on the days the treatment is being conducted. The tentative dates of treatment are as follows:

Recreational use of Nippo Lake while being treated may reduce the efficiency of the treatment and may interfere with the treatment process. Regular recreational use of the lake can occur between treatment periods and once the treatment has concluded.
Anyone needing additional information should contact the Nippo Lake Association at 603-315-8026.

A Letter from the Nippo Lake Association President:
Love of family. Love of place: Themes that run through why the Nippo Lake community has contributed $111,500 to making Nippo Clear. We are a generous, thankful community. We have risen to the challenge of understanding why our lake deteriorated over the past decade and have come together to implement a thoughtful, well reasoned and determined strategy to restore water quality. Our tax deductible gifts match a $172,000 grant to make this possible. As we consider end of the year charitable contributions, please keep Nippo in mind. Give online or send your check to the Nippo Lake Association, Inc. P.O. Box 213 Barrington, NH 03825-0213.
Just for fun: Everyone who has contributed $250 or more by December 31, 2020 Is entered into a special Loon Float raffle!

With summer in the rearview, it's time for our other favorite season at Nippo: AUTUMN! The fall season also means it's time for the yearly Nippo Lake draw down. Lack of rain this year has resulted in the water level slowly dropping over the summer. On October 12, 2020 NHDES will officially begin the annual water draw down. Make sure to get those docks and floats in order!

We had a high flying Nippo Lake fan. This bald eagle took a little tree top tour before heading off. Thanks for sharing Kayla Fitzgerald! |

A few residents caught sight of an American Black Bear taking a dip in the lake. The bear was sighted swimming around the east side of the lake. Remember to stay your distance, keep your pets inside, and pull in any bird feeders! |
