NIPPO LAKE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING (VIA ZOOM)
JUNE 27, 2020
JUNE 27, 2020
9:00 Lynda Brushett
The meeting was called to order by Lynda Brushett and also welcomed the Zoom participants. Zoom participants ranged up to 41 during the course of the meeting. Paul Doucette agreed to preserve the Zoom meeting for future reference.
9:05 Kevin Fitzgerald
Kevin presented a brief history of lake actions and grants, emphasizing these points:
· Cyanobacteria occurrences began in about 2010 due to phosphorus residing in the lake bottom
· Two grants from DES totaling $175,000 occurred in 2017 and 2019
· We are applying for another grant of $172,000 to do the recommended alum treatment
· We have to match 60% of the grant
· Some Board of Directors have pledged amounts of 2, 3 and 5 times the planned $2,000 Guardians donations of $2,000
9:25 Don Kretchmer
Don summarized three approaches for dealing with cyanobacteria:
· More big fish, fewer smaller fish
· Pollutant input control (road, ditches and culvert repairs, rain gardens, rubber razors)
· Alum treatment
Examples and results from other lakes were given: 200 other lakes, including several in VT and ME and one in New Hampshire.
During the Q and A portions, Don made this point:
· Nutrient internal load has accumulated for 300 years due to periods of clear cutting, farming, and the raising of sheep as well as more recently from stormwater runoff from homes, drainage ditches, driveways and gravel roads.
10:15 Lisa Loosigian
Lisa summarized the Soak Up The Rain program, and gave examples of projects around the lake.
10:35 Kevin Fitzgerald
Kevin presented the Guardians program that had been approved by the Board of Directors. Its features are:
· A tax deductible donation of $2,000 makes one a Nippo Lake Guardian
· Guardian flags are being presented to Guardians
· Guardians are encouraged to fly their flags as a means of recognition and encouragement to others to become Guardians
· Kevin listed numerous reasons why one should become a Guardian, summarizing both the advantages to lake remediation and the negative impacts of not doing the remediation
10:45 Business portion
Treasurer’s report and minutes of the previous meeting were summarized and approved.
Dave Dickson reported further on the Grants history and further needs in satisfying them.
10:55 Meeting Summary
Lynda Brushett described events that were in the planning stage, and the proposed budget for this next year. The budget was approved.
She stated that checks for membership, Guardian donations, and additional donations should be mailed to Diane Dickson, P.O Box 213, Barrington NH 03825
The meeting was adjourned, with thanks to everyone who participated via Zoom.
Respectfully submitted,
John Richards
Board Secretary
